What Is an EMDR Intensive?

EMDR intensives offer a more concentrated way of doing trauma therapy for people who want to make meaningful progress without limiting the work to one hour each week. Rather than stopping just as important material begins to emerge, an intensive gives us several hours to prepare, process traumatic memories, take breaks when needed, and help you leave the session feeling grounded, having hopefully processed the disturbing material in an integrated fashion.

Intensives are generally scheduled in two, three, or four-hour blocks and may take place over one day or several days. I currently offer intensives throughout the week and am open to your schedule.

Some clients feel that one intensive helps them move forward with a different understanding of what happened to them and a greater sense of relief, clarity, or emotional freedom. Others choose to schedule several intensives so that we can address a number of memories, patterns, or treatment goals. Some people prefer to leave several weeks between sessions so that they have time to reflect, integrate the work, and notice what continues to come up.

Depending on your needs, it may be helpful to continue working with your regular therapist between intensives. I am also available to provide ongoing intensive therapy for clients who want longer-term support with several interconnected treatment goals.

Practice Location

EMDR intensives are generally held in person at my office in Arlington, Massachusetts. I do not routinely offer intensives by telehealth, although I am open to considering remote work when it is clinically appropriate and is the format you strongly prefer.

Who Is an EMDR Intensive Right For?

An EMDR intensive may be right for you if you understand your patterns intellectually but still feel emotionally stuck. Many people come to EMDR after years of carrying unprocessed trauma, complex trauma, attachment wounds, grief, shame, or painful relationship experiences. You may know that a relationship was harmful and still feel confused, devastated, or unable to trust yourself again. You may struggle with trust in men, fear of intimacy, repeated relationship patterns, or anxiety about your future.

An intensive can also be helpful for professionals, academics, therapists, executives, and caregivers who have limited availability each week or feel exhausted by opening difficult memories for only 50 minutes at a time.
